Session 07: Sabi definitions
Topics for this session
❖ Definitions of sabi
Thoughts*
The reason were are doing group work on sabi definitions is 1) so that you are directly engaged in, and invested in, an process of trying to sort out what sabi means instead of just being told, 2) multiple definitions helps create a combinative effect which helps gesture towards the best definition of sabi which, as I suggested in class, is ultimately non-discursive and cannot be captured by a single declarative statement.
Required—to be completed for today's session
✓ There is a PDF on bSpace: J144Sp13 class sabi definitions. The definitions have been listed in A-Z order. Select one that you think is particularly good and one that you think is not among the best, and be ready to say in class why you made your choices in terms of concept (and perhaps the example that is to illustrate the definition), not English clarity, etc. Please do not waste our time by deciding just to "think fast" if asked in class. Come to class ready with a clear choice and a clear statement of your reasoning, perhaps something you have written down and read aloud. You may do complete the preparation in any of the three below ways:
- as an individual
- as the full group—in which case you ALL must "meet" and discuss in real time. No member can allow the others to "represent" him or her. Here's my definition of a meeting: Meeting types
- as a part group—if a member(s) of your group wants to respond as an individual, the remaining members can still collectively complete this assignment via a meeting of some sort
*UNDER CONSTRUCTION: If this has not been erased it means something on this page is incomplete. Perhaps I want to recheck information or perhaps I haven't converted the page from the version of the previous class. It is available but should be taken dubiously.
*THOUGHTS: My hope is that you look at this portion BEFORE a session. If there is content here it might help you focus on the main points of the day. However, I add various things here at various times. When I feel I haven't succeeded in class stating something clearly, I might restate it here. Of if it is a difficult concept in might be given in written form here. I will assume that you have read and rechecked for changes this session in preparation for any midterm or other quiz or test. J144 Spring 2013: I am not quite sure how I will use this section or even if it will exist.
